With its roots in the 12th century, the school can trace its history in Edinburgh to the 16th century and nurtured many famous men who went on to careers of merit, including Henry, Lord Brougham (Lord Chancellor of England), Sir Walter Scott, James Pillans, Viscount Melville, Sir Charles Bell, James Boswell, Thomas Erskine (Lord Chancellor of England), Francis Horner, David Hume, Dugald Stewart, Henry, Lord Cockburn, Francis Lord Jeffrey, and many others. The book covers 1519-1849, specimens of class exercises, and primary source material appendices. There are 14 engravings, including a frontispiece plate of the neo-classical High School building and a fold-out facsimile of an exercise done by Sir Walter Scott. The rest of the engravings are in-text. The engravings are complete. The book was used for contemporary research; there are corrections in pencil and notes in margins, a small amount of notes laid in, a blank Application Form from the Mitchell Library, and a High School Card which outlines the course of study with the principal class books and the table of fees, dated 1828. Additional curricular materials are listed within the book. This is invaluable for understanding the education of young men in the Scottish Renaissance and thereafter Very good.. First Edition.
