London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1886. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Three volumes. The three-decker first edition in olive green decorated publisher's cloth, gilt spine titles. All three volumes have been professionally re-backed with the original backstrips preserved, corners are bumped, a good clean set. The front boards have light rectangular halos presumably from an old circulating library label. Jessie Fothergill, best known for *The First Violin*, was a popular novelist often compared to Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot. A scarce first edition. *Sadleir* 890. *OCLC* locates only six copies.
