Very Good to Near Fine book with crimping at bottom of spine, slight slant, tiny bump top back corner, and with some yellowing of front page edges; in a Fine minus jacket with touch of edge and corner wear. This copy signed by Russell on the title page. The first Hook Runyon mystery. The one-armed hook is a railroad detective (i.e., a yard dog) for the Santa Fe during WWII. This mystery is set in northwest Oklahoma at a large complex where trains are iced on their way east, carrying vegetables from California. Much of the labor at the yards is provided by German POWs from a nearby prison camp. An interesting and historical mix of ingredients, capped by fact that Runyon lives in a caboose that is filled with his book collection! Books signed by Russell are quite hard to find.
